Lock bumping, bump and rap keys is a lock opening technique that has been employed by locksmiths for about the last 70 years as a way of opening pin tumbler locks.
In the UK nearly every household has a pin tumbler lock of some description securing there home. The most common of these are Yale locks and other makes of rim cylinder and Euro Profile cylinders which can be found on the majority of UPVC doors.
For many years lock bumping remained very much a ‘trade secret’. This has changed with the advent of the internet. In resent years countless web sites have appeared selling the modified ‘bump keys’ and teaching the techniques to the general public. The technique is easy to and the keys are inexpensive.
As you would expect when information like this is available it will inevitably be used and recent months have seen a rising number of burglaries where ‘bumping’ has been the suspected method of entry
