The Institute of Certified Locksmiths (ICL) is a non-profit organization set up by locksmiths for locksmiths. The aim of the ICL is to promote the highest standards in an industry that has been subject to a lot of bad publicity, and to restore the public's faith in what should be considered a respectable and highly skilled professionals.
At this time there is no licensing or regulation of any kind operating in the British locksmiths industry. Any individual can set themselves up as a trading locksmiths. Many 'so called' locksmiths have very little training or knowledge of what they are doing. They see locksmithing as a way of making some fast money for very little effort. This has been damaging to the industry as a whole, with the so called 'driller killers' taking customers away from the genuine trained and skilled locksmith. As a result many reputable company's have sadly been driven out of business.
Members of the ICL:
Are fully police checked
Always carry identification
Are fully trained locksmiths of the highest standard
Are regularly vetted and assessed
Will always use non-destructive entry techniques whenever possible
Will always offer a fair and reasonable price
Will always fully invoice and guarantee all work
The ICL is now actively pursuing higher standards within the UK locksmiths industry and is working with government, manufacturers, law enforcement and suppliers to raise standards. The ICL is also now providing training at a reasonable cost and to the highest standard.
